The prostate is a walnut-sized gland. It surrounds the urethra and adds fluid to the semen during ejaculation. If you have a prostate problem, your first sign is often painful urination or a frequent need to urinate.
In men younger than 50, the most common prostate problem is prostatitis, or inflammation of the prostate. Men older than 50 most commonly experience prostate enlargement, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH.
