The Calypso© 4G Localization System from Varian® Medical Systems (or Calypso, for short) is a state-of-the-art imaging system to track real-time movement of tumors during radiation therapy. It is a new advancement in radiation therapy and is helpful in the treatment of many cancers, including prostate cancer.
During radiation treatments, subtle movements can cause the radiation beam to shift focus, hitting healthy tissue. This can lead to unwanted side effects, such as incontinence or impotence. The Calypso system uses both real-time imaging and external beam radiation therapy to keep the beam precisely focused on the tumor, even if the body moves. This minimizes damage to healthy tissue and lessens the side effects related to radiation treatment. How Does Calypso Work?
Calypso uses Implantable or Surface Beacon® Transponders. They function much like a GPS and alert the external radiation beam if the tumor has moved away from the treatment zone, stopping the treatment. Once refocused, treatment resumes.
